Trongsa Dzong (Fortress)

An approximate distance of 4km from Norbu Lingka Resort, located along the high-way to Bumthang is the glorious Trongsa Dzong, built on a spur overlooking the gorge of the Mangde River.

In 1543, as per Lha-Dhang Lama, Lam Ngag-Gi Wangchuk's prophecy, the tutor of Kunkhen Pema Karpo visited Yoeling village, to the north of the present day Trongsa Dzong, where Yoeling Lhakhang is located. Here Lam Ngag-Gi Wangchuk in his clear spiritual vision saw at night a sparkling light emanating from a cliff in the middle of a thick forest. Upon going to the site of sparkling light , he saw the Bagha of Dorji Phagmo (Vajravarahi) and the soul lake of Palden Lhamo Dhuesolmo (Mahakali) as well as the footprints of her riding horse along the waist of the cliff.

Yongdzin Rinpoche built a hermitage at this site and meditated on the spot where he had witnessed Palden Lhamo in person. In doing so, he realized that it was a prophecy that in future there would be a Dzong, like a god's palace, from whence the reign of Palden Drukpa would flourish.

As prophesied by Lha-Dhang Lama, Zhabdrung Rinpoche appointed Choegyal Migyur Tenpa as the first Trongsa Penlop. With the intention of bringing Sharchog Khorlo Tsipgyay, the eight eastern regions, under central control, the penlop built a Dzong on a tip of a conch-shaped cliff in 1652, at the present site of the present day Trongsa Dzong.

Taa Dzong (Tower Fortress)

‘once a watchtower that guarded the Trongsa Dzong against the internal rebellion.

Lion.

The Ta Dzong has now been converted into a state-of-art Art Museum (National

Taa Dzong of Trongsa is the most fascinating museum in the nation. It comprises
